What is escheatment?

»

The process of identifying financial accounts with remaining balances that are considered abandoned and are therefore transferred to the State is called escheatment. California state law mandates the requisite transfer of these unclaimed funds.

If you have not accessed your account or we are unable to contact you by means of postal mail for several years, your account may be considered abandoned.

To maintain an active account, please follow at least one of the steps below on an annual basis:

  1. Make a credit or debit transaction on your account.
  2. Login to your account online or via our mobile app.
  3. Call the Golden 1 Contact Center and reference your account.

If you have any questions or concerns related to the escheatment process, please contact us at 1-877-GOLDEN 1 (1-877-465-3361).

If you have an account or are the legal guardian of someone whose account has undergone the escheatment process, please contact your States’ unclaimed property department for further information.
