Why was I charged a fee for using my Golden 1 credit card at a merchant outside of California?

»

As a result of a legal settlement between merchants and credit card networks such as Visa®, merchants in the U.S. and U.S. territories were granted the right to assess a surcharge or checkout fee, on certain credit card transactions. California and several other states have surcharging restrictions, which means your Golden 1 credit card purchases at California merchants will not be subject to this fee.

It is important to note that the fee amount, which is capped at 4% of the transaction, will be the same regardless of whether you use your Golden 1 credit card or a similar credit card from another institution. At those merchants who have decided to apply a surcharge, you can avoid the fee by paying with your Golden 1 Debit Card instead.

If you believe a merchant is charging an excessive surcharge, you may make a report by visiting Visa's website and submitting a merchant violation report, under “File an Inquiry.”
